6 Days Rongai Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary

The 6 Days Rongai Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the northern side near the Kenyan border. This route is known for its gradual ascent, peaceful environment, and diverse landscapes, making it an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a quieter and more remote experience.

With an additional acclimatization day compared to the 5-day version, this itinerary significantly improves summit success rates while still maintaining a relatively short trekking duration.

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: 1,950m to 2,650m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Your adventure begins at Rongai Gate, where you complete registration and meet your trekking crew. The trail starts through cultivated farmland before entering a dense montane forest.

This section is rich in wildlife, offering chances to see colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species. The path gradually ascends, allowing your body to adjust comfortably to the altitude.

As you move higher, the forest begins to thin out, transitioning into moorland. By late afternoon, you arrive at Simba Camp, located at the edge of the moorland zone. The camp offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and distant plains.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Elevation: 2,650m to 3,600m
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

On the second day, the trail continues across open moorland with wide and expansive views. The climb becomes slightly steeper as you approach the Second Cave, a natural resting point along the route.

The terrain becomes more rugged as you gain altitude, and the vegetation becomes sparse. The trail winds through valleys and ridges before reaching Kikelewa Camp, which is situated in a sheltered valley surrounded by giant senecio plants.

This peaceful setting provides a perfect environment for rest and acclimatization.

Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

This is a shorter but steeper day designed to support acclimatization. The trail ascends through moorland and into the alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes more dramatic and barren.

You arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the towering Mawenzi Peak. The area is incredibly scenic, featuring rugged rock formations and a small alpine lake.

In the afternoon, you may take an optional acclimatization hike to a higher elevation before returning to camp. This helps your body adapt to the altitude and prepares you for the days ahead.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

On this day, you cross the Saddle, a vast and barren expanse between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is dry, windy, and exposed, creating a true high-altitude desert environment.

Although the trail is relatively gradual, the altitude makes the hike more challenging. You will arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon.

After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Your guides will provide a detailed briefing on the climb, and you will try to get a few hours of sleep before the midnight ascent.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit) → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

The summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. This is the most demanding part of the trek, requiring determination and endurance.

You will ascend slowly in the dark toward Gilman’s Point, where you will witness a breathtaking sunrise. From there, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Reaching the summit is an unforgettable achievement, offering stunning panoramic views and a deep sense of accomplishment.

After celebrating, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Your final day begins with a descent through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest. The trail is familiar but offers a new perspective as you descend.

As you return to Marangu Gate, you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificates. This marks the end of your incredible journey on Mount Kilimanjaro.
