8 Days Lemosho Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary

The 8 Days Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic, remote, and well-paced ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western side of the mountain, this route offers lush forests, rolling moorlands, and dramatic alpine desert landscapes.

The extended 8-day itinerary allows extra time for acclimatization, increasing summit success rates and providing trekkers with a less rushed, more comfortable, and unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 2,100m → 2,750m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

The trek begins at Lemosho Gate with registration and a briefing. You enter dense rainforest, rich with wildlife and birdlife. The trail is peaceful and less crowded, giving a true wilderness feeling from the start.

Mti Mkubwa Camp (“Big Tree”) is your first night stop, surrounded by lush greenery.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,750m → 3,500m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Today you leave the rainforest for open moorlands. Views of the Shira Plateau emerge, with unique vegetation like giant heathers and lobelias.

Shira 1 Camp provides a scenic campsite and a chance to acclimatize while enjoying panoramic mountain views.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,500m → 3,850m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

A short and gentle day designed for acclimatization. The trail across Shira Plateau is open and breathtaking, with wide vistas of the surrounding peaks.

Shira 2 Camp allows extra rest and time to prepare for the higher altitudes ahead.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m → 4,630m → 3,900m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Following the “climb high, sleep low” strategy, you hike to Lava Tower, reaching over 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp.

The terrain changes to alpine desert, barren and rocky, preparing your body for summit conditions. Barranco Camp, beneath the iconic Barranco Wall, offers one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,900m → 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

This day includes the famous Barranco Wall climb. It’s steep but manageable with guidance, offering dramatic views of valleys and ridges.

After the climb, the trail leads to Karanga Camp, a short day for rest and continued acclimatization before the final ascent.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995m → 4,673m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

The climb continues through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The environment is cold and exposed, with strong winds.

Early dinner and rest prepare you for the midnight summit push.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,673m → 5,895m → 4,673m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

The summit attempt begins around midnight. You climb slowly toward Stella Point to catch the sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point at 5,895 meters.

After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest. This is the most physically demanding day but also the most rewarding.

Day 8: Barafu Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 4,673m → 1,640m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

The final day is the long descent through alpine desert, moorland, and rainforest to Mweka Gate.

You complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate, marking the successful completion of the ultimate Kilimanjaro adventure.
